THE Black Dogs lifted the 90-year-old Bungay Charity Cup at the Maltings Meadow on Friday evening, beating previous holders and local rival Beccles Caxton by three clear goals.

An own goal mid-way through the first half gave Bungay the lead, and a goal from Scott Daniels two minutes into in the second half gave them a cushion. The third goal came five minutes from time from Aiden Lowe, who scored at the third attempt after his first two shots were blocked.

The trophy was presented to the winners by the Town Reeve of Bungay, Richard Cundy, who also presented the Harry Webster Shield to the runners-up, and medals to the three officials.

Charity Cup committee president Terry Reeve thanked Charlish Ltd for their sponsorship and support in other ways, the Bungay and District Sports Association for use of facilities, and committee secretary Graham Mickleburgh for getting fixtures completed despite several postponements because of waterlogged pitches.

He also thanked treasurer Graham Sampson for his efforts. The competition this year raised around £600 for charitable causes.

Bungay Reserves started their season with a battling performance which earned them a valuable point, despite being forced to defend for much of the game. The home side dominated possession in the opening half-hour without being able to create clear-cut chances, and Bungay gradually got a foothold in the game, with Granger Perez-Hunt's header from a corner skimming the bar, and Alfie Seamons shooting over after good work by James Youngman and Dan Shimmon. The Black Dogs took the lead in first half stoppage time, Charlie Jones tapping in after Perez-Hunt had latched on to a misplaced clearance from the home keeper.
Mulbarton started the second-half strongly, and equalised after 52 minutes, Cameron Mulley heading home from a right-wing cross. Thirteen minutes later Bungay conceded a penalty but James Shaw produced a fine save diving to his right. The home side had a goal disallowed for offside but the Bungay defence stood firm, and at the other end Youngman went close when he latched on to a long ball, only to see his shot beaten away by a combination of the home keeper and a defender.
