History of Bungay Town Football Club

Football action on a dull day Bungay Town Football Club was formed in 1925, following the amalgamation of existing Bungay clubs. The club joined the Norfolk and Suffolk League in 1935, a league they came to dominate during the club’s “golden years” from 1946 to 1952, when they won the League 4 times, the League Cup 3 times, and famously, the Suffolk Senior Cup at Portman Road, Ipswich in 1950.

During this period the club was one of the leading Amateur sides in Norfolk and Suffolk, and regularly played in front of 4 figure crowds at the “Rec”, their first ground.

In 1953 the club moved to their new ground, the Maltings Meadow, where they still play.

In 1961 the club’s famed cup-fighting tradition saw them win through 6 rounds in the F.A. Amateur Cup, losing only in a replay to Leytonstone (now part of Conference side Dagenham & Redbridge), and reclaim the Suffolk Senior Cup.

The club were founder-members of the Anglian Combination in 1964, and remained in the two senior divisions continuously until 1992.

In 1999 Bungay Town FC joined forces with other sports clubs using the Maltings Meadow as founder members of the Bungay & District Sports Association.

In 2003 the club merged with the existing junior club, Bungay Rangers, to offer footballing opportunities for boys and girls from 7 to 16, as well as running three Saturday sides.

In 2004 we merged with local, neighbouring club Ditchingham Rovers, to add a Sunday Men's team to the breadth of football available. This season also saw the formation of a Bungay Town Ladies team, reflecting the fact that football is now the major participation sport for girls in the UK.

The following year, 2005, witnessed the start of veterans football on the Maltings Meadow in an attempt to keep older players involved in sporting activity and demonstrate their silky skills.

Why not read more about our club in our club history, “Wheel ‘em in Bungay!” This book records the origins and achievements through which members of the club have given thousands of thrills and excitement.
