April 20th
Bungay waited until the last match of the season to produce probably their
best football. They started brightly against a Corton side who had given a
good account of themselves in their debut season. Bungay created a string of
chances but without success until Sam pushed the ball wide for Elliot to
fire home from the left. Their midfield maestros combined when Josh found
Tom on the edge of the box for the second, and Bungay added another when
Troy created the chance for Sam to finish expertly for his 23rd of the
season. Before the break a corner by Curtis managed to hit the far post.
With the wind behind them Corton produced their best spell, without making any clear chances, and before long the goals started to flow again for Bungay. Curtis's penalty for handball was pushed out to Miles whose shot was ruled out for encroachment. Curtis made no mistake with the retake. Rhys outpaced the visiting defence to score from Mark's long pass, and Troy added the next with an audacious flick over the keeper. The seventh arrived when Curtis lobbed home over a crowded penalty area. A fine save from a Rhys long shot kept Bungay at bay for a while, but he was soon onto a through ball from Miles to score from an impossible angle on the left. There was still time for Lambert to add a ninth, again from Miles's pass, and again from wide on the left.
It was the quality of Bungay's passing and the confidence with which they took their goals which was so impressive. There were seven different scorers, and 16 players appeared during the match, some slotting comfortably into unfamiliar roles. The win leaves Bungay stranded just outside the promotion places in third position, only one victory away from top spot. However with the second meanest defence in the division, and 95 League goals under their belt they can look back on a fine season.
