Wightman-King Cup Urgent Help Required Dream Teams
Bungay Town 2, Horsford United 2
THE Black Dogs were unable two hold on to a two-goal lead on Saturday and relinquished two Anglian Combnation division one points against a good Horsford side. Rory French got both the home goals, both laid on by the hard-working Eddie Collings, but a draw was a fair result between two well matched sides and the Horsford equaliser was worthy of winning any game, let alone gaining a draw. The game marked the return to the club of two former Town players, Paul Bullen and Sean Payne, adding to the strength of Richard Daniels’ squad, with Bullen starting and Payne coming on after only two minutes for Lee Henwood, who strained a hamstring in the warm-up.
Luke Field got in an early header from Paul Hunter’s cross but it was straight at the keeper and when Thomas Daniels broke down the right and crossed low there was no one on hand to get a touch. But the home side took the lead on 15 minutes as keeper Jimmy Bligh found Collings with a long kick and he turned the ball inside for French to score with a good finish from eight yards. Shortly after Neil Renaut laid on a chance for French but he shot straight at the keeper. Horsford came more into the game and Bligh was forced into a good save with his legs when a forward broke through. Another effort from the visitors cleared the bar when the ball broke to a player in the area and then a header from a volleyed cross just cleared the bar as they finished the half well.
But seven minutes into the second half Bungay went 2-0 up as a fine long ball from impressive captain Craig Hunting found Collings on the left and his cross to the far post was bundled in by French for his fourth goal in three games. Seconds later more good spadework form Colligns gave French another good chance but the keeper blocked his shot. Horsford weathered Bungay’s good spell and pulled one back in the 65th minute as Scott McKinney scored with a simple header from six yards from a corner.
And after the Black Dogs had carved out a couple of chances but failed to get in shots Horsford drew level with 12 minutes left with a superb goral from McKinney as he played a one-two with a colleague and crashed an unstoppable volley past Blight from 20 yards. Both sides went for a winner the closing stages, with Hunter firing over from 20 yards following a free-kick for Bungay and Bligh making a great save to beat out a fierce Horsford effort. And with virtually the last kick of the game Collings could have won it for the Black Dogs but fired wide from eight yards after Hunter’s effort was blocked.
Bungay Town 1, Wymondham Town 2
THE Black Dogs lost top place in the Anglian Combination division one as they slipped to a disappointing home defeat to Wymondham on Saturday.
All three goals came in a four-minute spell just before half-time, and with Mattishall drawing and Kirkley and Pakefield Reserves winning, Bungay are third on goal difference, with all three on 20 points.
But the home side should have been three up before Wymondham scored as they dominated the opening spell, despite losing Danny Wilby with a dead leg after only seven minutes, Paul Hunter replacing him.
They forced a corner in the first 10 seconds of the game as Rory French’s cross was headed clear and then the striker broke clear but his lob over the keeper cleared the bar.
French had an even better chance on 11 minutes as he was bought down as he was about to shoot, but the keeper made a flying save to keep out his spot kick. The clearance led to an indirect free-kick 12 yards out but Hunter’s shot was blocked by the wall. In the 27th minute a fine move involving Hunter and French set up Luke Field for a great chance but he pulled his low shot wide. Then a fine long ball from Tom Daniels saw Ed Collings do the hard work by working himself a chance with only the keeper to beat, be he too fired wide. The let-offs saw the visitors gradually get into the game, and Jimmy Bligh had to be alert to block an effort for a corner. Collings did net for Bungay but the effort was disallowed for offside. From the quickly taken free-kick Wymondham broke down the right and Neil Stannard scored at the far post when a low cross came over.
The Black dogs, stung by the set-back, were level within three minutes with a superb goal. Daniels, Hunter and French combined to set up Collings, and this time he blasted his shot into the net form 12 yards. But fatal relaxation from the kick-off saw Wymondham regain the lead immediately, stretching the home defence for James McCloy to stride forward and beat the advancing Bligh. Bungay had a chance to equalise before the interval as Hunter floated over a teasing cross by French misjudged his jump and missed his header. The second half saw fewer chances, with Bungay being able to make little real headway against a good Wymondham side, who had the better chances. Bligh finger tipped one effort over the bar and then made a point blank save from the corner. As Bungay’s efforts got more desperate Tom Amis had a shot blocked as French found him with a low cross.
We urgently need referees and linesmen to allow us to play our youth football matches at every age group from Under 7’s to Under 16’s.
YOU WILL GET PAID!
Why should you do it?
You watch Match of the Day, therefore you know the rules. Why should you go on a course? It is a lot easier to make the correct decision if you learn the rules and understand the game. A qualified referee brings discipline to the match and learns how to manage the players, the managers and the crowd. Our Club is desperate for referees for Sunday morning youth matches – every week we are always looking for two or three referees.
Here are the thoughts of 3 qualified referees who are members of Bungay Town FC
Chris Fuller aged 16. Attended Referees course January 2007. Started by being linesman for Saturday Reserves (Paid, plus something to eat and drink) Has just started attending the young referees’ development squad at Ipswich Town Academy. Last week refereed Ipswich U12s v Arsenal U12s. Academy aim is to fast track these young referees into senior matches in Ridgeons’ League then onwards to the professional football leagues.
Chris says: “Most lads will never have the chance to become premiership footballers but as a referee I have the opportunity to be a part of some of the biggest matches in the country and do it as my career. I really enjoy being able to get involved with the sport I love, and get paid to do it. Last Sunday I refereed two matches and I was paid over £40, that’s got to be better than working in the co-op or doing a paper round”.
Jon Fuller (Chairman) aged 52. Qualified Referee for approximately 7 years.
Jon says: “My boys have all played football for Bungay youth teams and it has always been difficult to find a referee every week. I referee because it means these boys can enjoy a safe, disciplined game of football according to the rules. I work every other Sunday and support the Bungay teams on a Saturday so I do not have the time to referee neutral adult matches. My boys have finished youth football now but I still seem to get a match every week because there are so few referees about. I do it because I love watching local football and if I didn’t referee on a Sunday morning I would have to wash the car”.
Richard Daniels (1st Team Manager) aged 40, Qualified ref for 3 years:
Richard says: I took up refereeing because for 25 years I was constantly on the referees back as a player so I thought after all those years of referees saying: “You give it a go”, I thought I would. I totally enjoy it and will return to the scene one day.

Bungay have decided to make use of the floodlights by starting a new, six team floodlit competition, the Wightman-King Cup. The aim is to give some local teams competitive midweek football under floodlights. All of the matches will be played at the Maltings on Tuesday evenings.
The six clubs, who are Bungay, Halesworth, Wenhaston, Wortwell, Poringland and Long Stratton, have been divided into two groups of three. Each team in each group will play both of the other two teams, thus guaranteeing each team taking part at least two games. The top two teams in each group will then progress to semi-finals and a final. The group matches will be played in September and October, and the semi-finals and final probably in March 2009.
The group fixtures started on Tuesday September 16th, and the remaining fixtures are:
September 30th: Halesworth Town v Poringland Wanderers
October 21st: Wenhaston United v Wortwell
October 28th: Bungay v Wortwell
November 4th: Long Stratton v Poringland Wanderers

Group A:
Halesworth 1-3 Long Stratton
Scorers: Halesworth: Adam Pritchard; Long Stratton: James Barnes 2, Carl Harwin
Group B: Bungay Town 3-3 Wenhaston United
