1st team promoted!

Bungay Town were promoted back to senior football following a vote at the Anglian Combination AGM on Monday 23rd. With teams leaving the League, two more teams needed to be promoted from Division 2 than were relegated from Division 1. With Beccles Caxton, who finished one place above Bungay in 4th, ineligible for promotion due to their lack of facilities, it was down to a vote at the AGM to see whether it was 2 down, 4 up or 1 down, 3 up. The clubs backed 4 up by 62 votes to 20, meaning Bungay are back in senior football after a break of seven years. The 2 down decision did mean that Bungay Reserves, who finished 15th in Division 4, were relegated to Division 5.
Bungay 'A' were also promoted at their recent League AGM and they will compete in Lowestoft League Division 2 next season.

Vets 5-a-side Tournament - 29th June 2008

Bungay Town FC hosted their 1st Veterans 5-a-side tournament yesterday with 9 local teams including some coming from Ipswich and Norwich. The weather was very kind, not too hot for the old boys, and the games were played in an excellent spirit.

Bungay Town win 5-a-side tournament
Cringleford and Bungay - finalists

Cringleford and Bungay reached the final where a close fought match ended at nil-nil. The match was decided finally on penalties with Bungay completing a 4-3 win. Congratulations should go to every player from every team as, in the words of referee Mick Thawley, it was refreshing to referee a competition with no arguments or bad tackles throughout the day.

Bungay Town intend this tournament to be a regular feature of their summer events and hopefully more teams will enter next year.

Presentation night

2008 awards

THERE was an air of celebration about Bungay Town Football Club’s presentation night at the Maltings Meadow on Saturday evening as three trophies were paraded. The Reserves won the Suffolk Primary Cup, bringing a county trophy back to Bungay for the first time 46 years, the A team won the John Moore Shield, and the Veterans Over 40s won the new over 40s senior cup. And Steve Brown was able to tell the club that the A side, who finished fourth in division three of the Lowestoft League, had won promotion to division two.

The first team finished fifth in the Anglian Combination division two, and chairman Jon Fuller said he felt manager Richard Daniels and his aide Lee Henwood had the capability to restore top quality football to the club. “If we all pull together we can achieve that, and my personal ambition is to see us in the Ridgeon’s League,” he said. He congratulated everyone on their awards, and named Veterans’ manager Tiger Whiting as winner of his Chairman’s Mug.

In the first team awards announced by Richard Daniels, his 17-year-old son Tom took the Players’ Player of the Year trophy and the Manager’s Player of the Year, while goalkeeper Jimmy Bligh, the only ever-present in the side, won the Supporters’ Player of the Year. Daniels gave the Bungay Black Dog Award to another 17-year-old, Daniel Lowe.

He thanked everyone for their support, particularly club secretary Brian Gower, Lee Henwood, Jon Fuller, linesman Paul Cunningham, assistant manager Lou Lewis and coach Graham Lewis. And he presented bouquets to Marilyn Fuller, and Betty Barrell, who has been supporting Bungay for 60 years and though in her 80s still goes to every game, home and away. Stalwart Gavin Webb got both the main Reserves team awards - the Player’s Player and Manager’s Player, presented by Reserves manager Dave Allen. Webb also won the Sunday Reserves Player of the Year trophy.

The A team awards, presented by Steve Brown in the absence of manager David Went, went to Ben Cunningham (Player’s Player), and Charlie Jones (Manager’s Player). Sunday manager Mick Simpson presented the Sunday awards, with Jake Wilson and Ash Ling getting the two Sunday first team trophies.

For the U18s, who in their first season in the Ridgeon’s Junior Floodit League finished creditably in mid-table, manager Mark Bartram presented the top player award to Daniel Lowe, with other awards going to Adam Honeywood and Alfie Seamons. And Alfie’s Dad, Mark Seamons, won the veterans Players’ Player of the Year, presented by Tiger Whiting, who awarded the manager’s award to Kevin Goldsmith and the award for the most consistent player to Mark Hanner.

Ladies awards 2008

He also presented special awards to Paddy Linfield as linesman, and Ian Goodwin. In the Ladies team, who later in the summer will be defending their Kirkley and Pakefield Ladies five-a-side trophy, player-manager Trina Beard named Kelly Garrison and Fran Paske as joint Players of the Year. The event, attended by about 100 people, included a barbecue.

Suffolk Primary Cup Final

Bungay Town Reserves 4, Old Newton Reserves 2 (aet)

Suffolk Primary Cup Final team

A Suffolk county trophy came to Bungay for the first time in 46 years on Saturday as Bungay Reserves gained a thrilling extra time victory at Woodbridge in the Suffolk Primary Cup final.

In soaring temperatures the young Bungay side (nine of the squad are still in their teens) lasted the pace better. And after equalising dramatically in the 90th minute of normal time they scored twice in the extra period to run out deserved winners. They had taken an early lead, but Old Newton looked the better side for the next hour and were ahead midway through the second half, before Bungay came back courageously to seize the initiative.

The young Black Dogs were ahead after only two minutes. Gregor Gibson struck the bar with an early effort and the ball fell to Jason Belmore to ram it home from eight yards. But Old Newton dominated the next phase and deservedly equalised in the 21st minute as Chris Steggalls scored with a low drive through a crowded goalmouth when the ball fell to him following a corner.

Bungay had a couple of half chances from successive corners, but Gavin Webb fired wide. Right on half time a good run by Ash Ling and a cross from Belmore set up James Youngman, who had one effort blocked and from the rebound a second shot met the same fate. Early in the second half Sam Olley replaced the injured Steve Batt, who went off with a cut head, and Old Newton were ahead on 62 minutes as a corner was swung into the far past and Steggalls touched it in with his head from almost on the line.

Alfie Seamons laid on a chance for Ling but his first touch let him down, and later a header from Callum Jones hit the angle of post and bar. But Bungay had grasped the initiative as old Newton wilted, and in the last minute of normal time a good move on the right saw Ben Clitheroe play the ball inside for substitute Brendan Gough to beat the keeper with a first time shot. In lengthy injury time Webb headed another curling corner off the line, and at the other end the keeper did well to turn a low shot from Ling away for a corner.

The Suffolk County TrophyThe Black Dogs had their tails up in extra time and after eight minutes Ling took the ball forward, received a return pass and wrong footed his marker before scoring with a low shot just inside the near post. A header which came back off the angle of post and bar showed Newton still carried a threat, but Bungay sealed it eight minutes into the second extra period as Jones put in a good run down the right and crossed for Youngman to hook the ball past the keeper.

It gave Webb the chance to collect the county cup for the first time since the first team lifted the Suffolk senior Cup with a 1-0 replay victory over Waterside Works at Portman Road in 1961-62. Every Bungay player deserves credit for the part they played in a fine team effort.

‘A’ team win John Moore Shield

Bungay ‘A’ 3-2 Hopton White Hart

Jubilant A Team

A goal two minutes from time from substitute Steve Batt saw Bungay ‘A’ win the John Moore Shield at Crown Meadow, Lowestoft on Friday night. In an entertaining game, the young Black Dogs took a two goal first half lead, then conceded three penalties as the visitors came back to draw level, but crucially the third spot-kick was missed, and Batt’s 88th minute header gave Bungay the win

Steve Brown with John Moore SheildBungay started well, and took the game to their opponents, and they took the lead after nine minutes, Richard Went scoring from close range after Steve Brown’s shot was not cleared.  At the other end, Bungay keeper Adam Honeywood made two good saves in the space of a minute midway through the half. Bungay doubled their lead after 25 minutes with a fine goal.

Good passing saw Brown set clear down the right, and his near post cross was met with a fine header from Chris Fuller. This galvanised Hopton, who started to dominate possession, and they pulled a goal back after 31 minutes, Danny Riseborough converting from the penalty spot after the referee had seen a push in the area.  Hopton continued to be on top at the start of the second-half, with Bungay finding it difficult to keep possession of the ball.

Hopton drew level after 58 minutes, Charlie Jones’ handball resulting in another penalty, which Riseborough again converted. Midway through the half Bungay’s first serious attack saw them almost regain the lead, Fuller’s low cross from the right just eluding Darren Bedingfield in front of goal. A minute later Hopton were awarded their third penalty when Honeywood brought down a striker who was bearing down on goal. Somewhat surprisingly the referee took no action against the Bungay keeper. Riseborough couldn’t repeat his earlier success from the spot, as his kick came back off the crossbar and was scrambled clear. Four minutes later Scott Redhead’s shot struck the Bungay bar, but the Black Dogs weathered the storm and began to have more possession.

Just as extra-time was looming, Bungay grabbed the winning goal. Bedingfield’s mazy run and cross found Fuller, whose shot was scrambled wide. From the resulting corner, Hopton failed to clear and Steve Batt pounced to head home from close range, leaving triumphant Bungay manager Dave Went “over the moon”. First Team Statistics

GOALKEEPER Jimmy Bligh was the only ever-present in the Bungay Town side in the season just ended. He played in all 35 games, with the final one, the Beccles Hospital Cup semi-final against Kirkley and Pakefield, marking his 50th appearance for the club.

Mark Harvey, who missed only three games, finished the season one short of his 150th game for the club, while Craig Hunting’s 19 games took his total to 287, putting him 18th in the all time appearance list. Kevin Talbot, despite playing less than two-thirds of the games, was again top scorer with 12 goals, giving him an aggregate for the club of 62. Joe MacFarlane finished second with eight goals, while Tom Amiss his seven in the 11 games he played towards the end of the season.

Paul Marshall, owner of Car & Commercial, said: 'Everyone seems to have a car these days placing this board in front of parents, spectators and players who will all need an MOT, service or possibly body shop repairs to their cars makes perfect sense. In particular at Bungay where our garage is conveniently located just off the Town centre behind the post office.'

Jon Fuller, Chairman of Bungay town, said: 'Sponsorship needs to be a symbiotic relationship, local companies advertising locally gives excellent value for money.'.

Simon Playford said: "Bungay Town are now such a massive club that it makes good business sense to keep our name in front of so many potential customers. With over 300 local families using the Maltings Meadow for sport and recreation there is a healthy audience of new learner drivers and their parents." 1st Team Manager, Richard Daniels said: "With 8 adult sides playing every weekend we desperately needed a new change kit, but this is such a quality strip that we often use it away from home even if there is no colour clash".

Opening of the Multi User Games Area (MUGA)

Friday evening, 2nd November, witnessed the grand opening of the new Multi use games area at the Maltings Meadow. Sammy Morgan, ex-Northern Ireland international and current Education Officer at Ipswich Town FC, opened the gates following a short tennis demonstration. The next two hours was followed by a football coaching session lead by the Ipswich Town development coaches and culminated in a series of mini-soccer matches between academy boys and Bungay Town’s young players.

We were blessed with great weather, although a little cold, and I am certain every parent and child who came along enjoyed the experience.

This new artificial grass surface is available for hire to other clubs or societies or for birthday parties for groups of keen footballers. enquiries should be made to Ms Ania Vanston, Site Administrator, on 01986 896143
